What is the story of Tina - The Tina Turner Musical about?

The Musical dramatizes the colourful and incredible life and career of Tina Turner, taking in both the highs and lows. Born Anna Mae Ruddock on a farm in a tiny southern U.S town in Tennessee called Nutbush in 1939.  Her father was an overseer of sharecroppers. Anna had a turbulent childhood and was moved around a lot before her mother ran away when she was 11 years old. Anna eventually went to high school in Brownsville and joined the local basketball and cheerleading teams. It was here that she met her first boyfriend, Harry Taylor, but the relationship came to an end when she discovered he had married another woman. After Anna graduated from high school, she became a nurse’s aide and hoped to become a nurse.

Anna enjoyed going to St. Louis nightclubs with her sister, in particular, Club Manhattan where, Ike Turner and his band Kings of Rhythm would regularly perform and one night, was invited to perform on stage, eventually becoming a guest vocalist in the band.

Her big break came in 1960 when, after a member of the band didn’t show up, Ike allowed Anna to record a track he had written, thinking that the original artist would then re-record the vocals later. However, an executive from the record label, Juggy Murray liked “A Fool in Love” so much, he paid $25K for the song and convinced Ike to make Anna the singer in the band, which he did, giving her the pseudonym - Tina Turner.
