The story of Wicked is actually a prequel to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz where many unanswered questions from the classic movie starring Judy Garland are finally answered. We find out what really happened before Dorothy dropped into the land of Oz and follow the stories of both the 'Wicked' witch, Elphaba and Glinda, the 'Good' witch from when they were at school together learning how to use the power of sorcery and follow their epic journey as a special friendship forms that alters their ways for the better.
The Costumes for Wicked have been created by Susan Hilferty and were originally designed for Broadway's production at the Gershwin Theatre. She has made over 200 costumes in total along with over 400 accessories for each character in the show deservedly winning a Tony award for 'Best Costume Design' in 2004. The outfits featured in the show are positively stunning with multiple shades of green adding to the atmosphere to visualize Oz and enhance Elphaba's incredible journey.
The stage at the venue is also truly mesmerizing. When entering the Apollo Victoria Theatre, you may notice a smoking Dragon which plays a big part in the story, and once the curtain goes up and the show begins you will be mesmerized by Glinda the Good Witch's huge floating bubble, and it doesn't end there as the whole the city of Oz is brought brilliantly to life in a sea of colour.
The iconic songs featured in the musical Wicked were written by award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz, and include well-known West End favourites such as 'Defying Gravity'. Another notable song that features in the show comes during a visit to the Emerald City, where the stage is a sea of green in 'One Short Day' before being swept away in the Oz Dust Ball Room and 'Dancing Through Life' before finding the true meaning of friendship with the emotional finale; 'For Good'. Wicked is truly an unmissable West End experience that is the perfect festive treat for the entire family and will surely continue to delight London theatregoers for many years to come.
