David Mitchell To Reprise Shakespeare Role In 'The Upstart Crow'

David Mitchell is set to reprise his role as William Shakespeare in The Upstart Crow as the production finally returns to the West End with performances in London now scheduled later this year at the Apollo Theatre from September 23rd to December 3rd.

The play was originally commissioned as a BBC television series to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and the stage version of The Upstart Crow follows on from the TV show. The Upstart Crow opened in London at the Gielgud Theatre back in early 2020 but was forced to close prematurely due to the Covid-19 pandemic along with the rest of the productions in the West End.

David Mitchell now returns to star in The Upstart Crow as playwright William Shakespeare alongside Gemma Whelan who  reprises her role as Kate. Further casting for The Upstart Crow is to be announced at a later date.

The Upstart Crow features a book by Ben Elton, and is directed by Sean Foley. The creative team also features sound design by Andy Graham, set and costume design by Alice Power, and lighting design by Tim Mitchell.

Performances of The Upstart Crow will be at the Apollo Theatre from September 23rd 2022.
