Following an acclaimed run in 2019 at the Almeida Theatre, Robert Icke's play, The Doctor is set to open in the West End later this year with Juliet Stevenson reprising her starring role as Professor Ruth Wolff. The play will showcase at the Duke of York's Theatre from September 29th until December 11th

Prior to the West End appointment, The Doctor will tour its way through three other cities in September with limited seasons set for Brighton from 5th-10th, Bath from 13th-17th, and finally Richmond from 19th-24th.

The Doctor is loosely based on Arthur Schnitzler's 1912 play 'Professor Bernhardi', and centres on the ethical dilemma Dr Wolff faces as she attempts to treat a patient who is dying with sepsis. When the patient's family send for a priest to deliver her last rites and Dr Wolff denies him entry, her decision goes on to make national headlines as a divisive scandal arises putting the power of faith against modern medicine.

After its premiere at the Almeida Theatre in London, The Doctor went on to headline the Adelaide Festival in 2020 ahead prior to a planned West End transfer, which was unfortunately delayed until now due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Doctor will mark Stevenson's third West End appearance in an Icke production after previously starring in both 'Hamlet' and 'Mary Stuart'.

Performances of The Doctor will be at the Duke of York's Theatre from September 29th to December 11th.
