Based on Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler's 1912 play 'Professor Bernhardi,' Juliet Stevenson now stars in Robert Icke's new production of The Doctor as it transfers into the West End at the Duke of York's Theatre following a season at the Almeida Theatre where it received critical acclaim and enjoyed a sold-out run.

The Doctor is set in a London hospital, and focuses on senior physician Professor Ruth Woolf who is treating a patient with sepsis when a priest is summonsed to give the last rites by the girl's parents. For the doctor, this poses a huge moral dilemma, which subsequently erupts into a national scandal.

Robert Icke and Juliet Stevenson reunite following their collaborations on previous plays 'Mary Stuart' and 'Hamlet' for the Almeida Theatre which both eventually transferred into the West End.

The original play by Schnitzler is rarely seen in London and was first performed at the Kleines Theater in Berlin in 1912. it was actually banned in Austria until 1918 and the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Icke's new and blistering version of  Schnitzler's work modernises the play, setting it in a contemporary hospital, while also asking probing questions about our innate views on bias, identity, and perception.
