Nancy Medina directs The Darkest Part Of The Night at the Kiln Theatre. A heartfelt and gripping drama from Zodwa Nyoni that delves into the explores both the beauty and complexities of what it really means to care for each another.
As Dwight and Shirley bury their mother, they look back on their upbringing in the Chapeltown area of Leeds in the 1980s differently. In a time filled with poverty, racial discrimination, and police brutality, the whole family struggled for survival.
Dwight was learning what it meant to be an autistic young black boy in a unfeeling world seemingly determined never to understand him, while Shirley was attempting to break out and forge her own independence free from the unfair expectations both at home and at school.
Now, years later as adults, the pair must bring the fractured pieces of their past together to enable them to move their lives forward.
