It's time to fasten your seat belts, as The Car Man is back in London in a spectacular new staging to celebrate the150th anniversary of the iconic Royal Albert Hall..
In a glorious celebration for the Hall’s 150th anniversary, Matthew Bourne, along with 'New Adventures', his acclaimed dance company bring their multi-award-winning production of The Car Man to perform in the atmospheric and iconic London venue for the very first time.
The Car Man is a dance-thriller which is based on Bizet’s beloved Carmen, which will be completely reimagined for the Royal Albert Hall's gladiatorial arena, adding a frisson of danger into the mix as the talented dancers perform throughout the auditorium amid stage designs created by Lez Brotherston.
The production will feature an expanded company of 65 musicians and dancers along with a live orchestra and some epic new designs and will run for 14 performances giving the public a fantastic opportunity to see this extraordinary and unique new production. The setting of the 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory now becomes a 1960's greasy garage-diner in America where the dreams of a small-town are shattered by the sudden arrival of a handsome stranger. The inhabitants of the town become fuelled by desire and heat and get driven into an unstoppable spiral of betrayal, greed, lust, and revenge.
The vivid storytelling from Matthew Bourne blends perfectly with one of the most passionate and dramatic musical scores ever written, with arrangements from Terry Davies featuring Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite (after Bizet’s Carmen), which creates a dance event like no other.
