Following the news from the production team that the layout of the Playhouse Theatre is to be transformed for the upcoming West End revival of the musical, Cabaret, further details have now been confirmed. Eddie Redmayne will star alongside Jessie Buckley, with performances commencing at the Playhouse Theatre from November 15th. Tickets to Cabaret are to go on sale next week.
Redmayne will play the role of Emcee with Jessie Buckley playing the part of Sally Bowles. Full casting is expected to be announced shortly.
The 'Kit Kat Club' will be created by turning the Playhouse Theatre into an 'in-the-round' performance area with patrons being allocated a dedicated club entry time in order to experience and enjoy all “parts of the Kit Kat Club and pre-show entertainment.”
Cabaret is set in 1930s Berlin, and follows the relationship between nightclub singer Sally Bowles and American writer Cliff Bradshaw. Rebecca Frecknall is to direct the show, which is to be inspired by contemporary artists. Official press material states: “The Kit Kat Club has taken over the Playhouse Theatre while it has been standing empty. The marginalised have staked a claim, the artists have taken over, filled their container and found their community. It’s 1930s Berlin. It’s 2020s London. It’s Then, it’s Now. Who knows how long it will reside here. For now, we’re enjoying the party. The party at the end of the world.”
The musical will feature a book by Joe Masteroff, with both music and lyrics from Fred Ebb and John Kander including “Money.” and “Don’t Tell Mama”. Costume design and set is by Tom Scutt, choreography by Julia Cheng, sound design by Nick Lidster, and lighting design is by Isabella Byrd.
Performances of Cabaret will begin at the Playhouse Theatre from November 15th 2021. Tickets for Cabaret will be on sale soon.
