The Peacock Theatre is a west-end theatre situated in Portugal Street, close to the Aldwych. The venue has a 999-seat capacity and is owned by, and part of the 'London School Of Economics and Political Science' campus who uses the theatre for conferences, open days, public talks, lectures, and political speeches. The university has a long lease with Sadlers Wells, London's principal centre for contemorary dance, and has negotiated a deal to bring in dance companies to the venue under the banner 'Sadler's Wells in the West End'.
The Peacock regularly plays host to performances of dance and ballet, conferences, pop concerts, and award ceremonies. The stage in the venue is approximately 36' by 33'
'Gibbons Tennis Court' first became used as a theatre on this site back in the 17th century and in 1911, the 'London Opera House' was opened here, and became the 'National Theatre of England' three years later. Neither of these ventures were successful and the theatre was eventually sold in 1916, becoming the 'Stoll Theatre'.
