It's time to seize the day! It has been announced in a tweet from the 'Newsies' show account, that Broadway favourite, Newsies is set to make its London premiere later in 2022 with both a venue and performance dates to be announced in due course.
The Newsies musical is set in late 19th century New York and follows the fortunes of Jack, a newspaper boy who dreams of a better future for himself. The inspiration for Newsies is from the Newsboy Strike of 1899 — which was a two-month campaign that forced a change in how newspaper boys were compensated for their work in the industry.
Newsies received its world premiere at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey, before transferring onto Broadway in the spring of 2012 where it ran for two years at the Nederlander Theatre. The musical won two Tony Awards: 'Best Original Score' and 'Best Choreography'. The original cast of Newsies included Jeremy Jordan in the role of Jack Kelly, John Dossett as Joseph Pulitzer, and Kara Lindsay as Katherine Plumber.
Newsies features a book by Harvey Fierstein, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and music by Alan Menken. Further details on the creative team for the London production of Newsies London, as well as venue information, dates, and full casting will be revealed at a later date.
Performances of Newsies will begin in London later in 2022.
