After the recent announcement that the Broadway musical, Newsies is to open in London later this year, both a venue and performance dates are now confirmed. Performances of Newsies will begin at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre from November 28th 2022.
Newsies is to be an immersive production which is staged in-the-round and features a book by Harvey Fierstein, with music from Alan Menken, and lyrics by Jack Feldman. Matt Cole both directs and choreographs the production.
Speaking about the forthcoming opening of Newsies, Cole commented, “As a huge fan of the original Disney film and the Broadway production, I am extremely honoured and thrilled to be reimagining this brand new version for London and the UK. This site-specific version of the show provides an exciting opportunity to present the piece in a non-traditional format. Set in the round, the audience will be thrust into turn-of-the-century New York, where the action and choreography will weave its way in and out of the audience.”
The Newsies musical is based on the 1899 Newsboy Strike, and follows the fortunes of young Jack Kelly, a newspaper boy in New York in the late 19th century who protests for a change in conditions and manages to unite his fellow newsboys to collectively fight for justice. The Broadway production of Newsies opened back in 2012 and won Tony Awards for both 'Best Choreography' and 'Best Original Score'.
The creative team behind Newsies features sound design by Tony Gayle, scenic design by Morgan Large, costume design by Natalie Pryce, and lighting design by Mark Henderson. Casting for Newsies is still to be revealed
Tickets to Newsies will be available to book online soon.
