Pulitzer-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury’s play, Marys Seacole first premiered in 2019 in New York and now moves its way over the pond to showcase here in London at the Donmar Warehouse for a limited season from April 15th until June 4th.
The name Mary Seacole may sound familiar from school history lessons, watching historical documentaries or visiting museums, but there is much more to Mary Seacole than the stories that have been passed down generations, and this powerful new play delves deeply into the life of the pioneering Jamaican Crimean war nurse and businesswoman.
The play charts both Mary Seacole's life and her compassion caring for others, whether through her own volition or her career working in a nursing home or serving as a nurse during the horrors of the Crimean War which has seen her achievements subsequently honoured through not only the 'Mary Seacole Trust' which promotes Mary Seacole as a source of huge inspiration in creating an inclusive and diverse society but also with a statue that sits proudly outside St Thomas' Hospital.
