Producer Sonia Friedman commented the return to the West End of the play : “After a year of immense loss and struggle for so many, including the unthinkable shutdown of our theatre industry, to announce the new dates for the return of Tom’s astonishing play to the West End. Leopoldstadt is a passionate drama of enduring love and familial bonds that asks us to bear witness to our pasts, no matter how painful that may be… Leopoldstadt could not be more pertinent.”
Leopoldstadt is set in Vienna in the early years of the 20th century and tells of a Jewish family who rediscovers their religious faith and identity amidst war, pogroms, and separation. The play takes its inspiration from Stoppard’s own family history and honours his family members who perished in Nazi concentration camps.
The Wyndham’s Theatre hosted the world premiere of Leopoldstadt on 25th Jan. 2020, with a final performance taking place just before the first lockdown on 14th Mar. 2020. The play scooped the 'Best New Play' award, and Adrian Scarborough won 'Best Supporting Actor' at the Olivier Awards, and casting for upcoming performances is to be announced shortly.
Performances of Leopoldstadt at the Wyndham’s Theatre will resume from 7th August - 30th October.
