Frederick Ashton’s superb full-length classical ballet, Sylvia is a delightful feast for the senses, set to Delibes’ marvellous musical score all played out in the atmospheric setting of the Royal Opera House..

Ashton’s second full-length ballet was written in 1952 as a sparkling showpiece for his muse Margot Fonteyn using Delibes’ gorgeous 1876 score. The ballet eventually fell from the repertory but was reconstructed in 2004 by Christopher Newton to celebrate Ashton’s centenary.

Delibes’ music was inspiration for Ashton to create perhaps his most inventive dance using a wealth of detail and fun in every single character but especially in the role of Syvia herself!. From the powerful huntress of the first act to the artful and witty character who makes her escape from pirates, and eventually the beautiful rosy bride at the end, she is portrayed to be a brilliantly layered character – with an ever challenging choreography to test each new generation of faithful Ashtonians.
