Occupational Hazards Tickets London

The Hampstead Theatre presents Occupational Hazards - Stephen Brown’s new play based on Rory Stewart’s critically acclaimed memoir which explores the extraordinary moral conflicts, the dangers and the comic absurdities that can occur during a foreign occupation.

The stage is set in September 2003 and Rory Stewart, a thirty year old former British diplomat has been posted to a province in the newly liberated Iraq to serve as Governor.. His brief is to help to build a new and civil society at peace with both its neighbours, and itself.  It is an ambitious mission, admittedly, but surely outperforming Saddam Hussain shouldn't prove too difficult…..should it?

He soon realises that the sudden liberation from centuries of repressive tyranny has allowed a toxic mixture of tribal conflict, sectarian tension and ethnic divisions to burst open once more. The sharp local realities of the situation plunges Stewart into a dangerous vacuum of political intrigue in which the double-dealing of opposing interest parties create a whirlpool of confusion and chaos. As the pressure mounts from all sides for a settlement Stewart realises that the politics of the situation is indeed local, and that Washington may have to drastically rethink its dreams of democracy in Iraq.

This production of Occupational Hazards is supported by The London Community Foundation & Cockayne – Grants for the Arts.
