The Royal Opera House plays host to Robert Carsen’s production of Giuseppe Verdi’s final opera - Falstaff, now set in 1950's England which draws out the larger than life character's warmth, love of food and sharp wit which lies at the very heart of the opera.

While the ‘merry wives’ attempt to outmanoeuvre the scheming men, into tender romance and merriment,  Falstaff moves with a comic intrigue!  The old, and lecherous, Knight of the Realm, Sir John Falstaff just can’t resist the ladies. But the ladies can certainly manage to resist him, and three of them hatch a devious plot to once and for all put an end to his advances!

After being thrown into the Thames via being tossed in a laundry basket, Falstaff, the portly knight with an irrepressible appetite for both laughter and life, is feeling a little down in the dumps, but eventually manages to see the funny side of things once the plot is revealed, and accepts the mockery with a stoical dignity. After all, as the opera concludes, ‘all the world is a joke!'
