John Patrick Shanley’s multi award winning masterpiece - Doubt, A Parable, in which a Catholic school principal bravely steps up to question a priest’s ambiguous relationship with a troubled student, gets its first London revival in a decade at the Southwark Playhouse.

The scene is set in 1964, and things are beginning to change.  “What do you do when you’re not sure?” asks Father Flynn, the progressive and much loved priest at the St. Nicholas Church School in the Bronx, in his sermon.

In the mind of the rigid principal Sister Aloysius however, when such an unconscionable accusation is levelled against the Father, she realises that the only way to get any justice is to create it herself. And as for the truth?  As Father Flynn always says, “Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty.”

John Patrick Shanley delves deep into the dark and murky shadows of moral certainty with his characters precariously balancing on the ultra fine line between truth and consequences.
