David McVicar’s classic production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) at the Royal Opera House embraces both the seriousness and comedy of his extraordinary work and talent. The audience is transported into a magical world full of dancing animals, flying machines and starry skies providing a wonderful and atmospheric setting for Mozart’s kaleidoscopic score.

Prince Tamino makes a promise to the Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina from the wicked enchanter Sarastro. He embarks on his quest, accompanied by the bird-catcher Papageno – but alas, all is not quite as it seems…

Tamino and Papageno discover that Sarastro is actually a wise and kind leader, but still they must undergo three great ordeals to be united with their true loves: Tamino with the beautiful Pamina, and Papageno with his Papagena.

Mozart composed Die Zauberflöte for the Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna drawing on the spectacle and earthy comedy of what was popular Viennese theatre of the day. As well as being a comedy, the opera is an vivid expression of Mozart’s own profound spiritual beliefs: Enlightenment from the search for wisdom and virtue are at the very heart of the story which made it an an instant success with audiences and even Mozart’s supposed bitter rival Salieri described it as an ‘operone’ – a great opera.
